Lit

The tree is up. The champagne is open. Someone put on Smooth Jazz Christmas and honestly it was the right call.

This is the most lit time of the year.

Blood orange opens first — bright, celebratory, the citrus of a very good toast. Champagne accord threading through like the sound of glasses finding each other across a room full of people you actually want to be around. Mandarin underneath, warm and generous, the scent of a kitchen where something extraordinary and slightly indulgent is happening and nobody is apologizing for it.

Fresh balsam in the heart. Real pine. The tree you spent entirely too long picking because it had to be exactly right. Clove moving through — dark, spiced, the sophisticated version of festive.

Then the base arrives and this is where the night gets honest.

Leather. Frankincense. Cashmeran holding everything together like the warmth of people pressed close in a room that's too small and absolutely perfect. 

The Traeger is cold tonight. The teak table is packed inside. The rascals are here and the tenderloin is gone and the sequins are slightly askew and someone just put bells on the dogs.

Red lips. Red wine. Red and green lights everywhere.

Someone just told you they love you and meant every word of it and somehow that feels completely normal tonight and you're going to think about that in February.

The chaos that ensues. The heartbreak when it's gone. The way it always goes too fast.

Light it before it does.
