Stay Late — The Night Nobody Planned But Everybody Needed
I've been burning on the table since 5pm.
I watched you chill the champagne. I watched the tequila and rum come out of the cabinet like they'd been waiting for this exact night. I heard Fleetwood Mac go on quietly — the way it always goes on, like the night already knows what it's doing.
I felt that electric quiet in your body while you waited for everyone to arrive. That specific joy — the anticipation of the people you love walking through the gate.
Those raised beds came through. More basil for you, less for the frenchies.
The salad with the basil and the dill and the parsley — from the garden, obviously. The smoked steaks. The fresh corn. The crew arriving at 6.
And then Vinny walked in.
I watched the night shift into something nobody planned but everybody needed. I heard the laughs get louder. I watched the champagne turn into tequila turn into nobody checking the time.
Nobody left when they said they would. Obviously.
So tell me — who was at that table? What did the night give you that you didn't know you needed? And what was the last thing someone said before the night finally, reluctantly ended?
Nobody called it. Nobody ever does. Nobody's leaving.
The grilled meats are done. The corn is on the table. Someone just pulled a salad straight from the garden like that's a normal thing people do — and honestly it is now. Wine on the left. Something dark and something clear on the right.
The Traeger is still warm. This table has seen some things.
Mandarin opens bright and generous — the first sip of something cold on a warm summer night. Basil threading through like something growing three feet away that ended up in tonight's salad. Warm air drifting through the heart the way a perfect summer night drifts — endless, generous. Nobody is saying last call.
Then someone came back with the bug spray.
And just like that — the decision was made. Without a word. Without a vote.
The House Blend settles into the base the way the night settles when it becomes the kind of night people still talk about in February. Tonka and amber warming underneath everything — the heat that has nothing to do with the weather and everything to do with the people. Sandalwood grounding it all, slow and close, the scent of a summer night that knew exactly what it was doing.
Your people. That table. Country giving way to yacht rock giving way to something nobody remembers requesting but everyone knows every word to.
Zero regrets. Nobody's leaving.
